Veteran defender David Luiz is reportedly set to leave Arsenal this summer, bringing an end to his two-year spell at the Emirates.
After two hugely successful stints at London rivals Chelsea, in which he won the Champions League and the Premier League title, the Brazilian joined the Gunners for a fee of £8m back in the summer of 2019.
Despite an at times erratic debut campaign for the former Paris Saint-Germain defender, he ended the season with an FA Cup winners medal, starting in the final as Mikel Arteta’s side got the better of Frank Lampard’s Blues at Wembley.
While that triumph appeared, at the time, to be something of a turning point for the north London club, the team has since seemingly gone backwards in Arteta’s first full season in charge, with Arsenal looking set to miss out on European football altogether.
Amid that troubled campaign – which also saw the club suffer a Europa League semi-final defeat to Unai Emery’s Villarreal – Luiz initially featured fairly regularly, before a hamstring injury curtailed his long stint in the side, the player having started just one of the last 11 games.
With this disappointing season for the club now reaching its climax, it would appear that the defender’s time is at an end at the Emirates, the Telegraph reporting that he is set to leave the club when his contract expires in the summer.
As per the report, the player was told on Friday that his current deal would not be renewed, although it is believed that Luiz had already been contemplating becoming a free agent anyway, the centre-back now free to pen a pre-contract agreement with another side.
Having already allowed the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis to depart in January, Luiz’s departure will be the latest in Arteta’s squad clearout, the Spaniard seemingly keen on building a younger side after axing a number of the team’s senior members.
The former Manchester City assistant currently has Rob Holding, Pablo Mari and Gabriel as his centre-back options, although it would appear the club are eyeing up a new recruit, the report suggesting that they have an interest in Fulham defender Joachim Anderson, the Danish international currently on loan at Craven Cottage from Ligue 1 side, Lyon.
