Martin Odegaard and Nacho Monreal win Copa Del Rey

Former Gunner Nacho Monreal won the Copa Del Rey with Real Sociedad on Saturday, which was also good news for Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard.

On Saturday, Real Sociedad finally played their 2019/20 Copa Del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao – which had initially been postponed due to the Covid pandemic.

Nacho Monreal made the starting lineup, just as he had in the quarter-final and both legs of the semi-final, helping Real Sociedad to a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory to lift the trophy. Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winner from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute.

Martin Odegaard will have been pleased to hear that, as he was on loan with Real Sociedad last season. He scored three goals and assisted three more in his five games from the third round to the semi-final, including scoring against parent club Real Madrid.

Odegaard is now a Copa Del Rey champion, despite missing out on the final, although it’s unconfirmed whether he’ll receive a medal for his efforts. You’d hope so, given his obvious influence on the run.

Regardless, congratulations to Odegaard and Monreal on an unlikely cup success with Real Sociedad, the club’s first trophy since the 1980s.
