Bukayo Saka held back from England duty by Arsenal – for now

Bukayo Saka is still with Arsenal as they assess an ongoing hamstring issue, despite his call-up to the England national team over the March break.

The official England Twitter account reports that Bukayo Saka has not yet joined up with the national team for the March fixtures. Instead, he’s still with Arsenal for further assessment on an ongoing issue.

According to the statement, England hope Saka will join up with the squad later this week. Presumably, that will depend on the results of Arsenal’s assessment.

We know that Saka was struggling with injury problems in the build-up to the current break. He picked up a hamstring issue against Tottenham Hotspur, missing the Olympiacos clash the following Thursday.

Though he returned to action with a start against West Ham United, he came off after 74 minutes.

Mark Mann-Bryans reports that it’s not a ‘recurrence’ of the hamstring injury, just a case of Arsenal managing it as an ongoing issue. The dialogue between Arsenal and the FA is reportedly positive.

All the same, the result is that Saka won’t play against San Marino on Thursday. He might be available for Albania and Poland if things go well.
