Arsenal set to hand David Luiz contract extension

Arsenal are reportedly set to hand David Luiz a new contract extension at the Emirates, amid the player’s impressive displays this season.

The Brazilian has often been something of a perplexing figure at times in his Premier League career, with solid performances often going hand in hand with an inevitable erratic display.

That being said, the 33-year-old has looked much more reliable in recent months, with the only real low point a harsh red card during the defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers a few weeks ago.

Alongside Rob Holding, Luiz has thrived in the Gunners backline, the former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain man keeping out summer signing Gabriel of late.

It now looks as if he will be rewarded for that impressive form, the Independent reporting that the club are set hand him a new contract extension, with Mikel Arteta valuing his ‘influence’ on the team.

The former Brazil international’s current contract is set to expire in June and he will likely be offered a new one-year deal, in line with the club’s policy for players over 30.

Luiz has already played 48 league games since his arrival from rivals Chelsea in 2019, while he also played a key role in helping the club lift their 14th FA Cup trophy last season.

At Stamford Bridge, the defender helped the Blues to the Premier League title, two Europa League’s and the Champions League across two spells, while he also won two Ligue 1 titles during his spell at the Parc des Princes.

Such experience is seemingly a real asset for Arteta, with his young side in need of a senior figure like Luiz in the dressing room.

Equally, with Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis having left the club in January, as well as William Saliba heading out on loan, the squad isn’t exactly too well-stocked at centre-back, with Calum Chambers and Pablo Mari struggling with injury, while Gabriel has suffered a dip in form of late.
