It is lovely to watch the Arsenal live without being on the edge for the last 20 minutes or so. Not only it helps my aging heart, it also gives the manager opportunity to rotate players wisely which could be vital for the later stages of the season. Arsene Wenger had already made four changes from the team that beat Swansea with David Ospina, Kieran Gibbs, Francis Coquelin and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain coming in at the expense of Petr Cech, Nacho Monreal, Granit Xhaka genius.it/ and Alex Iwobi. He was also able to use all three subs when the game was […]

Arsenal 6 – 0 Ludogorets

“Petr Cech” (CC BY 2.0) by Ronnie Macdonald Arsene Wenger raised eyebrows when he handed David Ospina a starting place in his side’s Champions League opener against Paris Saint-Germain ahead of Petr Cech. The Colombian made a string of high-profile errors in the competition last season in the club’s defeats to Dynamo Zagreb and Olympiakos. As a result, Gunners supporters were bemused to see the 28-year-old between the sticks rather than the reliable hands of Cech in the Parc des Princes. Despite an early setback when Edinson Cavani put PSG ahead in the opening minute, Ospina produced a number of fine saves to […]

Could Wenger’s keeper decision backfire on Arsenal?

Well, this was a game we produced a floodlight robbery by snatching a point we didn’t deserve. But how many times we have seen this type of thing happening against us, maybe lady luck has started smiling towards us at last. Arsenal travelled to Paris as big underdogs looking to open their Champions League campaign with a win but left the pitch, very grateful for a point – an away point against the strongest team in our group. It was a very strange formation Arsenal deployed for the game; out of our two central midfielders it was Coquelin who […]

PSG 1-1 Arsenal

They say the season starts here, when the summer transfer window is shut. It makes this gritty win a very important one, especially after losing our first home game of the season in the opening weekend. What a goal it was that got us back in the game from our captain Koscielny; an overhead kick of the highest quality from a genuinely brilliant player. I hope the head injury he suffered before our injury time, penalty winner is not serious. Kudos to Santi Cazorla for keeping his head and slotting the penalty away under such intense pressure, given that the delay […]

Arsenal 2 – 1 Southampton

Arsenal have made a bid for Alexandre Lacazette today but Lyon have rejected the Gunners’ €35m offer. Not a big surprise as similar bids from West Ham and us earlier in the summer were rejected for the prolific striker. Lyon’s valuation of Lacazette is reportedly around £40 million, a reasonable asking price in the current market and more than affordable for a club of Arsenal’s stature. Arsenal need a top striker if they are going to launch a genuine Premier League title challenge, and Lacazette would be very good addition given the shortage of top strikers available. So why would […]

Le combat – Ben Yedder VS Lacazette

It is only natural for the transfer rumour mill to grind into life following a major tournament, although as we have seen in the past signing a player who has done the business at a World Cup or a European Championship does not always guarantee success (cough El-Hadji Diouf cough). But what about a bloke who has plenty of Premier League experience, and who burst back into prominence with a series of fine showings at Euro 2016? One such example would be Moussa Sissoko, who despite a season of mediocrity and disappointment at Newcastle United became a key figure in […]

Is Sissoko the Man to Solve Arsenal’s Midfield Puzzle?

Arsenal stars who were not involved in Euro 2016 and Copa America returned to training for the first time on Wednesday. In the absence of players such as Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Olivier Giroud, Laurent Koscielny, new signing Granit Xhaka, and Alexis Sanchez, who was player of the tournament as Chile won the Copa America for the second time in two years, Arsene Wenger had the chance to watch some of his fringe players more closely, with Yaya Sanogo back in training after a loan spell at Charlton last season, Chuba Akpom, who helped Hull to promotion, and Mathieu Debuchy, […]

Arsenal begin preparations for new season

Finishing above our local neighbours Tottenham for the twenty-first consecutive season is reason enough to celebrate and believe it has been a successful campaign, but it should be valued as a missed opportunity. Arsenal may never get a better chance to end their long wait for a Premier League title, with Leicester City producing the biggest shock in league history by finishing ten points clear at the top in a season where the big guns continued to falter. The Gunners are not exempt from this, with complacency, tactical stubbornness and an inability to produce big performances when the team is […]
