Losing both our first choice center backs before a game of this importance, predictably led to a first half of defensive shambles! A strange decision by the boss to play Chambers against the Liverpool team with Benteke up front did not help. Monreal with Gibbs coming in for the left back position or maybe, even Debuchy would have been a better choice. All the talk about how the whole team performed terribly is way off the mark when your 2 replacement center backs play the way they did. The less said… the better for them.
Actually, I thought the team did well to keep the score to 0-0 for the first half due to some heroic defending by Cech and Coquelin. After all, I guaranteed that Cech would gain us many points during the season. I thought Monreal was very good too. Yes, there were some below par performances but it was mostly due to uncertainty of our defensive unit. Bellerin did not have one of his better games and Cazorla was a bit off colour.
Second half was a total transformation of what we witnessed in the first half. Full credit to Chambers and Gabriel as they got their act together, showing their mental strength; not an easy thing to do after such a disappointing first half.
As we stopped wasting possession and making silly mistakes at the back, Ozil got back in the game. I thought he had a very good second half. If only Giroud had his goal scoring boots on …
