This was a nervous affair; a game we had to win, not just for the 3 valuable points but to stop the inevitable fall out from media who were waiting like vultures jump on our failing.
In fact the game should have been done and dusted before the half time but for some wayward finishing, some good saves from their goalkeeper and plain bad luck. Alexis making his first start of the season should have scored in the opening stages, showing that despite all the effort, brilliant attitude, hunger and skill, he is still a little short of full match fitness.
But no fear, brilliant Ozil assisted Giroud to deliciously volley for our opener in the 16th minute. They equalized with probably their right back Ward’s best goal of his career in the 28th minute but the Arsenal team orchestrated by Ozil and Cazorla deservedly won the game with an own goal thanks to Alexis’ great leap and header at the far post 10 minutes after the restart.
Without sounding repetitive as I mention this in my last blog 1 used, 2 left, Santi Cazorla is our best central midfielder and should be the first name in the team sheet in that position. He was excellent again.
I feel we still could improve our squad in defensive midfield and maybe in center forward positions. Coquelin is doing a stellar job there but still looked a little raw with some rush challenges and Arteta looked really good when he came on towards the end but to take the next step we need a World class one. Less then 2 weeks left of the summer transfer window, keep an eye on Transfer Rumours.
All in all very satisfying win in a very difficult place and circumstances.
